Week 8: Activity

I didn’t read the instructions very thoroughly so when I heard “finger painting,” I already had an idea of what I wanted to do. However, it did not turn out the way I wanted so I decided to do something a little bit different. I used the Automatic Drawing for my painting. I thought “Why not? It would be fun to finger paint the drawing.” I used three different shades of blue for my painting since it is my favorite color. I finger painted the outer areas with blue, then a lighter blue, and sky blue for the middle area.

What was the experience like?

The experience was relaxing, but also fun. I enjoyed taking time painting each little piece, though I kind of did paint out of the line. While I was painting, I realized how long it’s been since I’ve picked up a color pencil, crayon, or paint and it kind of made me feel like I was a little kid again.

Was it easier, harder, or different than you expected?

I expected it to be harder and tedious as I was painting with my finger, but it was actually really easy. I didn’t want to mess up on which colors I would paint it and I usually like it when the colors match so I went with three different shades of blue.

How was the experience of making a painting with no subject? Confusing & Frustrating? Liberating & Inspiring?

I can honestly say that it was something different. I believe that it is easier with a subject because we already know what we’re going to do and how we want it to look, but without a subject made it a bit mysterious.

How does this compare to other paintings you have seen?

Each painting is different and while some may look similar, there are always a few differences in the painting that makes it stand out. Other paintings I’ve seen have a meaning to it or an  inspiration behind it. My painting is simply a painting made freely without a meaning or an inspiration and I think that’s nice too.
